32 More Drivers Half Way To Championships Thursday

LINCOLN, Neb. (Sept. 9, 2010) – Competitors in 35 more classes put in their first day of runs Thursday, as day three of the 38th Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships went into the books at the Lincoln Airpark. Out of the 549 drivers that took to the courses, 32 of them are halfway home to a 2010 National Championship.

Despite threatening skies, there was never a full rain shower, and the cloud cover made for some lightning quick times on the two courses.

Sam Strano, of Knoxdale, Pa., wasted no time working toward defending his three-consecutive F Stock titles, wheeling his brand-new brand new, Strano Performance Parts/Summit Mtg 2011 Ford Mustang to a 0.649-second lead over Greely, Colorado’s Kevin Youngers.

Likewise, two-time defending C Prepared driver Mike Maier, of Livermore, Calif., got out to a big lead on his 39-car field in the Maier Racing 1965 Ford Shelby Mustang. Maier holds a stout 2.002-second advantage over second place, co-driver and four-time Champion Frank Stagnaro.

Maier is one of three husband-wife tandems to lead at their half-way point—a similar number to the Tuesday-Wednesday classes. Defending Champion Brianne Maier leads CPL in the same car as husband Mike. Jerry and Kyra Jenkins, of Vancouver, Wash., lead E Stock and ESL, respectively, in their Americas Tire-Vancouver Mazda Miata. Finally, Toby and Beverlee Larsson, of Anaheim Hills, Calif., lead F Prepared and FPL in their elitetint.com/OS Giken/Bilstein BMW 328is.

Three of the battles are nearly even heading into Friday’s final three runs, with margins less than one tenth of a second. Defending Champion Jerry Jenkins has the tightest battle, as he is only 0.042-second ahead of second place Bartek Borowski, a two-time D Stock Champion. Beverlee Larsson has just a tick more breathing room, with 0.060-second on nine-time National Champion Jodi Fordahl. Kyra Jenkins has nearly twice the lead husband Jerry does, but it still stands at a scant 0.081-second over Tara Johns.

Today’s 549 competitors, plus the 608 from Tuesday-Wednesday total 1157 racers this week, equaling the mark for the most ever at a single Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships. The 2007 event also had 1157.

In addition to the 32 classes running for Championships, three classes (Street Modified FWD, Street Modified FWD Ladies and Formula SAE) are competing as supplemental classes, but will not formally recognize National Champions.

Top SCCA Solo Awards Presented Wednesday Night In Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. (Sept. 9, 2010) – The Sports Car Club of America’s top two Solo awards were presented Wednesday night, at the first of two gala banquets held at the University of Nebraska’s Lied Center during the 2010 Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships in Lincoln, Neb.

The Solo Driver of Eminence is the top driving honor bestowed upon a Solo competitor, based on their long-term success as a competitor in SCCA autocross competition. This year’s recipient was Jeff Cashmore, who earned his third-consecutive D Modified National Championship earlier in the day. Cashmore, of New Berlin, Wis., now has seven National Championships to his credit since he began competing in 1997. More impressive than his winning percentage is the variety of cars in which he has won. As one presenter noted, his titles have come in “slow front-wheel drive cars, slow rear-wheel drive cars, fast rear-wheel drive cars and now, really-fast rear-wheel drive cars.”

The Solo Cup is presented annually to the individual making a long-term contribution to the Solo community. This year’s recipient, Bill Goodale, of Milford, Mass., has not only been a successful competitor over the years, winning seven National Championships since his first “Nationals” in 1974, but has made significant contributions to the program, primarily as a steward.

“People ask me all the time why in I go spend a week in Nebraska every year,” Goodale remarked of his endearment of the large Solo community. “They ask ‘do you have family there?’ and I respond, ‘yes, I have a lot of family in Nebraska this time of year.’”

Both awards will be re-presented at the 2011 SCCA National Convention Presented by Gumout in February.

33 Drivers Take Titles as Opening Half of Tire Rack Solo Nationals Concludes

LINCOLN, Neb. (Sept. 8, 2010) – The first round of titles were awarded Wednesday after the opening two days of competition at the 38th Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships at the Lincoln Airpark. In all, 25 of the 33 classes were taken by drivers holding the overnight lead, while eight others saw a change at the top for the National Championship.

Leading the list of drivers holding serve from Tuesday’s runs were a pair of drivers taking their fourth-consecutive National Championships. Mark Madarash, of Red Oak, Texas, drove his No. 191 Pontiac Trans Am to a 1.384-second victory over Samuel Krauss’ Doug’s Auto/NEPTune/TRE Eagle Talon in E Street Prepared. Jeff Kiesel equaled the feat in E Modified, taking his Goodyear Tire KFR Turbo Sprite to a dominating fourth-straight title.

Kiesel’s wife, two-time Champion Shawn Marie Kiesel, was one of the eight drivers to pass the opening day leader to earn a title. Trailing defending and 13-time Champion Patty Tunnell’s BarekAub.com/Hoosier/H&R BMW M3 by 0.137-second after day one, Kiesel took the lead after her second run in the Goodyear KFR Turbo Sprite and was then helped by Tunnell’s trouble on her second run, when the supercharged motor expired. The Kiesel family almost had three Nationals wins, as 10-year old son Zak finished second in the supplemental (Non-Championship) Formula Junior B driving a kart he only first ran this week.

In other family news, Jeff and Denise Cashmore, of New Berlin, Wis., took the D Modified and D Modified Ladies Championships, respectively, in the Del Long Sprinto 7. Andy and Anne Hollis, of Austin, Texas, took Street Touring Xtreme and STXL, respectively in their Soulspeed/GRM/PowerCurve Honda Civic Si. Finally, Jinx and Ginette Jordan, of Terrell, N.C., won in F Street Prepared and FSPL, respectively in their SoloPro Driving School/Hoosier Honda Civic.

Jinx Jordan had a particularly memorable title run, holding off multi-time Champion David Fauth by just 0.059-second. It was Jordan’s third National Championship, and first since 1988. The 22-year gap is tied for second longest all-time behind Jim Garry and Gerald Fink, who went 23 years between titles.

The driver making up the most ground on the field Wednesday to take a Championship was Tom Ellam, of Livermore, Calif, in E Prepared. Ellam was fifth after runs on Tuesday, but outran the field on Wednesday in his Altamont Tech/Ankeny Racing Mazda RX-3 by enough to secure his seventh title.

Other drivers coming from behind on day one to win their class National Championship Wednesday included: John Ma (D Stock), Kim Whitner (Street Touring Sport Ladies), Andrew Pallotta (Street Touring U), Steve Hoelscher (D Prepared), Anne Robinson (D Prepared Ladies) and Suzanne Segal (Formula 125 Ladies).

Driving his Holeshot! Mitsubishi Evo 8, Pallotta, of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, was one of two drivers to capture a National Championship as a Rookie at the Tire Rack Solo National Championships. Day one leader Kristi Gaus, of Wexford, Pa., won STU Ladies in her maiden trip to Nationals in her Mitsubishi Evo 8.

In addition to the 33 National Championships awarded, two young drivers earned supplemental class wins at the Nationals. Julian Garfield, of Mount Airy, Md., earned his third-straight win at Nationals, moving up from Formula Junior B to Formula Junior A this year. Tom Regganie, of Shorewood, Ill., took the Formula Junior B win.

38th SCCA Tire Rack Solo Nationals Under Way

LINCOLN, Neb. (Sept. 7, 2010) – The 38th installment of the Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships began Tuesday, with the opening day of competition for the first half of nearly 1,200 competitors that will battle for National Championships through Friday at the Lincoln Airpark.

A cold front brought high winds Monday evening that eventually settled into cool temperatures for the opening runs at 8 a.m. Tuesday. The rest of the day was picture perfect, providing plenty of sunshine and grip.

The annual “Nationals” is split into two, two-day events in which competitors run three runs per day on two separate courses.

Of the 35 classes running Tuesday and Wednesday, only seven defending Champions carry the lead heading into Wednesday’s deciding three runs, meaning there could be many new faces taking class wins.

One defending Champion showing that his back-to-back titles have not allowed him to become complacent is two-time, defending E Modified Champion Jeff Kiesel, of Poway, Calif.. Driving his No. 143 Goodyear Tire KFR Turbo Sprite, Kiesel showed that his development in the car and as a driver in the last 12 months have paid off, holding an astounding 3.192-second lead over six-time National Champion Bob Tunnell’s No. 199 BarekAub/Hoosier/H&R/Chase Cam BMW M3.

Other defending Champions holding the lead going into day two are: Jimmy Crawford (H Stock), Mark Madarash (E Street Prepared), Denise Kugler (G Prepared Ladies), Jeff Cashmore (D Modified), Patty Tunnell (E Modified Ladies) and Paul Russell (Formula 125).

A trio of husband/wife teams lead their respective open and ladies classes, including Andy and Ann Hollis (Street Touring® X and STXL); Jinx and Ginette Jordan (F Street Prepared and FSPL); and Jeff and Denise Cashmore (D Modified and DML).

In Solo competition, a pair of drivers often share the same car, and E Prepared is shaping up to be a battle royal between teammates Kevin Wenzel, of Longmont, Colo., and Christopher Dorsey, of Littleton, Colo. Wenzel leads Dorsey by 0.136-second in their 034 EFI/Apikol/TRD Toyota Corolla GTS.

Kinch Reindl, of Denver, Colo., has a slight lead over David Barkley, of Hot Springs, Ark., in D stock, with a margin of 0.086-second. That margin is an eternity, though, compared to Laura Harbour’s slim 0.005-second advantage over Kim Whitner in Street Touring Sport Ladies.

Jenkins Takes ProSolo Finale Shootout Title

Lincoln, Neb. (September 7, 2010) – The Tire Rack SCCA ProSolo® Finale drew 263 competitors to the Lincoln (Neb.) Airfield for the final heads-up competition of the season. While many of the ProSoloists will stay for this week’s SCCA Tire Rack Solo National Championship event, the focus over Labor Day weekend was on the ProSolo prize. At the conclusion of the event, Jerry Jenkins, of Vancouver, Wash., earned the Gumout Super Challenge title.

Jenkins, driving a 1994 Vancouver Americas Tire Mazda Miata, made the Gumout Super Challenge elimination round after finishing second to Robert Carpenter, of Knoxville, Tenn., by just 0.040-second in the E Stock class. Jenkins advanced through the round of 32, 16 and eight to square off with Erik Strelnieks, of Cedar Park, Texas.

Strelnieks drove his 1993 Jungle Cat Racing/Hoosier/7Parts Mazda RX-7 to a 1.144-second win in Super Street Modified, but didn’t have enough to take down Jenkins in the semi-finals.

In the other bracket, Andy Hollis, of Austin, Texas, moved from fourth in the Street Touring class (where he sat just 0.144-second behind class-winner Bill Bounds, of Atlanta, in a very close competition) to the Super Challenge final four to meet Formula 125 winner Paul Russell, of San Diego. Hollis’ run ended there, leaving Russell as the last competitor with the change to knock off Jenkins.

Jenkins eliminated Russell in the final runs of the weekend to earn the weekend crown.

Hollis topped Strelnieks in the consolation run for third place, and also earned the Honda Challenge crown in a final elimination run of James Feinberg, of Cary, N.C., in a 1997 SoloPro Driving School Acura Integra.

Katy Nicholls, of San Diego, Calif., earned the Ladies Challenge title in a 1995 BMW M3 after finishing as the runner-up in the Ladies Class 2 to Christine Berry, of Alta Loma, Calif. Nicholls dispatched Ladies Class 1 winner Leslie Cohen, of Cardiff By The Sea, Calif., in the round of four before earning the title with a win over Tara Johns, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., in a 1995 Prudential/ABC Plumbing/Tweakit Mazda Miata.

The class racing was especially close in Lincoln, proving the talents of a very strong field. Between Bounds’ 1989 Team Handysmiff Honda Civic and Hollis in Street Touring sat Tim Smith, of Tucker, Ga., and David Omaley, of Greensboro, N.C. Smith’s1989 Team Toyo/Moton Honda Civic Si finished just 0.003-second behind Bounds, with Omaley’s 1989 Race Technology/Koni/ASR/7&Seven Honda Civic Si just 0.013-second in arrears of the class lead.

The A Street Prepared class was nearly as close, with Eric Stemler, of Peoria, Ill., hanging on for the win in a 1999 Chevrolet Corvette. Stemler led by just 0.006-second over Courtney Cormier, of Glen Allen, Va., driving a 2006 Evolution Chevrolet Corvette. Sharing a car with Cormier and finishing just 0.152-second behind in third was Michael Johnson, also of Glen Allen.

In C Street Prepared, Scott Fraser, of San Jose, Calif., drove his 1991 Mazda Miata to a 0.131-second class victory over Bill Schenker, of Corona Del Mar, Calif, in a 1999 Miata Roadster/ChaseCam/OS Giken/Motul Mazda Miata. E Street Prepared was even closer, with Greg McCance, of Toledo, Ohio, driving a 2002 Pure-Tuning/MODERacing Subaru WRX to a 0.059-second class win over Mark Madarash, of Red Oak, Texas. Madarash drove a 1988 Pontiac Trans-Am in the event. Jinx Jordan, of Terrell, N.C., earned a 0.127-second win in his 1993 SoloPro Driving School/Hoosier Honda Civic over David Fauth (1968 Signedge.com/PMWLTD.com BMW 2002), of Aurora, Colo.

In Street Modified, Craig Wilcox, of Blue Springs, Mo., drove a 2006 PPI/Oasis Tan/Got Grip/SoloRacer Mitsubishi Evo to victory. Just 0.078-seconds behind sat David White, of Chicopee, Mass., in a 1995 G-Fab Racing Nissan 240SX.

The 2010 Tire Rack ProSolo Finale ends the 2010 ProSolo season.

1200 Solo National Championship Competitors Ready For Action

TOPEKA, Kan. (September 6, 2010) – More than 1,170 competitors are on the entry list and registered to compete in the 2010 Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships beginning Tuesday, September 7 through Friday, September 10 at the Lincoln (Neb.) Airpark. This year’s event is the 38th running of the world’s biggest motorsports competition event.

Drivers are signed up to compete in 71 classes during the four-day competition, making timed runs throughout the week to earn the honor of being named National Champion.

Entering the event, 32 drivers are eligible for the Solo Triad award, the highest award a Solo competitor can earn. The Triad recognizes those drivers that win championships at three levels of National Solo competition: a Divisional Championship, a States Championship National Tour, and a National Championship, all in the same class.

The always-competitive Stock Category contains 15 of those eligible drivers gunning for the award. Three of those come in the Super Stock class. Kevin Dietz, of Seattle, Wash., piloted his 2003 Infowars.com Chevrolet Corvette Z06 to a Northern Pacific Divisonal title and the Western States Championship. Great Lakes Divisional Champion Matthew Braun, of Northville, Mich., added a Southern States Championship win for the second leg and is hunting for a National title in his 2007 Powerplug Lotus Elise. Steve Wynveen won the Central Division title and the Northern States Championship from his hometown of Germantown, Wis., behind the wheel of a 2004 mercuryracing.com Corvette Z06. Beavercreek, Ohio’s Crissy Weaver (2002 Body By Rick/Fatt Boyz/RAFT! Chevrolet Corvette) is searching for the award in the Super Stock Ladies class after Great Lakes Divisional and Northern States Championship wins.

In B Stock, Jadrice Toussaint, Paul Kozlak and Robert Thorne will battle each other and the field for the Triad. Toussaint (2008 Crown Honda Charlotte/Team FF Honda S2000), of Charlotte, N.C., won the Southeast Division title and the Southern States Championship; Litchfield, Maine’s Kozlak (2007 Red Haus Racing Pontiac Solstice GXP) earned his titles in the Northeast Division and Northern States Championship, and Thorne (2001 SCR Performance/Autoparts Warehouse Honda S2000), of Littleton, Colo., earned the Rocky Mountain Division crown and the Western States Championship.

The C and D Stock classes have Triad possibilities. Brian Coulson, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Chris Fenter, of Appleton, Wis., are searching for the award in C Stock, while John Ma, of Fitchburg, Wis., and Mindi Cross, of Phoenix, are eligible for the award in D Stock and D Stock Ladies. Coulson (2007 Hoosier/MAZDASPEED Mazda RX-8) is the Northern Pacific Divisional and Western States Champion, Fenter (2007 My Three Girls Mazda MX-5) won the Central Division, Southern States, and Northern States Championship, Ma (2007 M2 MINI Cooper S) is the Central Division and Western States Champion, and Cross (2006 MINIUSA.com/Hoosier Tire MINI Cooper S Red) capitalized in the Southern Pacific Division and Western States Championships.

Bartek Borowski, of Elmwood Park, Ill., Jerry Jenkins, of Vancouver, Wash., and Robert Carpenter, of Knoxville, Tenn., are Triad competitors in E Stock, with Sam Strano, of Knoxdale, Penn., racing for the Triad in F Stock. Borowski’s (1996 Mazda Miata) titles came in the Central Division and Southern States Championship, Jenkins (1994 America’s Tire-Vancouver Mazda Miata) in the Northern Pacific Divisional and Western States Championship, and Carpenter (1993 Evo Driving Schools/Volunteer X-ray Toyota MR-2) in the Southeast Division and Northern States Championship. Strano (2011 Strano Performance Parts/Summit Mtg Ford Mustang) earned the top spot in the Great Lakes Division and Northern States Championship.

The Street Touring Category has five Triad eligible drivers in four classes. Andy Hollis, of Austin, Texas, pilots his 1989 Soulspeed/GRM/PowerCurve/FTW Honda Civic Si in the Street Touring class after a Northern Pacific Division and Western States Championship. Geoffrey Chambers, of Fishers, Ind., won the Great Lakes Divisional and Northern States Championships in a 1990 Aim Tuning/RRAX.com/SRSBZNSS Racing Mazda Miata in the Street Touring Sport Class. Geoff Clark (2003 Taco Time/CiroDesign Mitsubishi Evo VIII), of Monroe, Wash., and Indianapolis’ Kevin Kent (2003 Wiki Wiki Racing/Myers Motorsports Mitsubishi Evo) represent the Street Touring Ultra class. Clark is the Northern Pacific and Western States Championship winner, while Kent took the Great Lakes Division and Northern States Championships. Christy Vehe (2005 Grand Subaru Subaru 4x4), of Bolingbrook, Ill., is a contender in Street Touring Ultra Ladies after a Central Division and Southern States Championship.

In the Street Prepared Category, eight drivers have their eyes on the Triad prize. Joe Tharpe (2003 R&S Racing/Loctite/Tire Rack/NGK Chevrolet Z06), of State Center, Iowa, leads the A Street Prepared class after Great Lakes Divisional and Southern States Championship titles. Aaron Miller (2005 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VIII), of Auburn Hills, Mich., and Craig Wilcox (2006 PPI/Oasis Tan/Got Grip/SoloRacer Mitsubishi Evo IX), of Blue Springs, Mo., battle in the B Street Prepared class. Miller won the Great Lakes Divisional and Northern States Championships, while Wilcox earned the Midwest Divisional and Southern States titles. Brian Peters (2003 Evolution/Hoosier/BWP Performance BMW 330i), of Litchfield Park, Ariz., won the Southern Pacific Divisional and Western States Championship in D Street Prepared, while Sante Fe’s Connie Smith (2004 3zero3ms.com/SPE-ED.com/Ska/KW/SAMR Volkswagen Golf) has a shot at a Triad in D Street Prepared Laides after a Rocky Mountain Division and Western States Championships. Mack Tsang (2005 Kidder/Lubrify/Protégé Garage Mazda3), of Fremont, Calif., can earn a Triad in F Street Prepared, having already claimed the Southern Pacific Divisional and Western States Championships.

The Prepared Category features two drivers in Triad contention. Toledo, Ohio’s Kevin Lewis (2003 Pure Tuning Mitsubishi Evo VIII) won the Great Lakes Division and Northern States Championship in X Prepared. Scott Lewis (1997 Chevrolet Camaro), of Columbia City, Ind., matched Kevin’s championships in the C Prepared class.

In the Modified Category, four drivers can win the prestigious Triad award. In A Modified, Dan Wasdahl (2008 Hoosier BBR/Phantom DVS-1), of Massillon, Ohio, has already won the Great Lakes Divisional and Northern States Championship. Clemens Burger, of Noblesville, Ind., can earn the title in a 1976 LeGrand Mk18 after winning the Great Lakes Divisional, Northern and Southern States Championship in B Modified. D Modified’s Jeff Cashmore (2002 Del Long Sprinto 7 YC-3), of New Berlin, Wis., captured the Central Divisional and Southern States Championships. Paul MaGee (1989 Rogues-racing.com/Perrier/Saul’s KBS Mk4), of Canton, Ohio, has a chance at F Modified after a Great Lakes Divisional and Southern States Championship this year.

The Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championship begins at 8:00 a.m. CDT on Tuesday, with competition continuing through Friday afternoon.

Record-Breaking Contingency Fund Offered To SCCA Runoffs Participants

TOPEKA, Kan. (September 1, 2010) – Racers participating in the 2010 SCCA National Championship Runoffs® Presented by Subway at Road America, Sept. 20-26, will vie for their share of a pool of contingency awards worth $1.6 million. The record-setting contingency fund will be distributed not only to the National Champions in 29 classes, but throughout the field.

Automobile manufacturers have prepared significant programs for competitors displaying the strengths of their race cars.

Volkswagen of America not only supplies the Official Pace Cars of SCCA, it offers $5,000 to winners in the Showroom Stock C, Touring 3 and Super Touring® Under, with second and third place finishers earning $3,000 and $1,000. H Production, GT-2, GT-3, and GT-Lite drivers earn $2,000 for a win, $1,000 for second and $500 for third, with F Production and Formula Vee drivers earning $1,000, $750, and $500 for podium finishes in a Volkswagen.

Honda Performance Development offers each Honda and Acura driver who begins the Championship race a $500 bonus, along with a $100 parking fee reimbursement to help cover the costs of the event weekend. Race winners earn an additional $2500 from HPD, with $1,500 and $1,000 for second and third-place finishes.

Mazda North American Operations offers $5,000 for a win in eligible classes, and $2,500 and $1,250 for podium finishes. Additionally, Mazda is offering eligible drivers up to $650 in tow money for the event.

Toyota/TRD offers up to $5,000 for a National Championship, and as much as $3,000 for a runner-up finish. Additionally, Toyota drivers earning the pole position will garner a $1,000 cash prize.

Nissan North America offers drivers in a Nissan 350Z, 370Z or Sentra $1,500 for a win. All non-current Nissan or Datsun model drivers can earn $750 for a title.

To go fast at the Runoffs, the rubber is just as important as the motor. BFGoodrich, Goodyear Tire, Hankook Racing Tire, Hoosier Racing Tire and Toyo Tires all offer programs to those who race on their products.

BFGoodrich has put together a unique program for National Champions, offering 12 tires and a seat in the SCORE Baja 1000 off-road race. Second through sixth-place finishers can earn up to six tires for the effort.

Goodyear-shod competitors will earn a $3,000 product certificate for a win, with $2,000 and $1,000 certificates for the remaining podium finishers.

Hankook is offering a product credit of $600 for a win, $450 for second and $300 for third.

National Champions on Hoosier rubber will earn four tires, plus an additional four tires for every 2011 SafeRacer SCCA Club Racing National event the driver enters.

Toyo offers cash awards, including a chart-topping $7,500 for a win, to the top five places in the Spec Miata race. In addition, the sixth through last place competitors will be entered into a drawing to win one of two $500 cash awards.

Those tires, of course, must be attached to wheels, and both Forgeline Motorsports and Panasport Racing Wheels offer contingencies for using their products.

Forgeline offers $500 for a win in eligible classes, along with cash for second and third-place finishes, while Panasport offers gift certificates for podium finishers, including $300 for race winners.

Brakes are among the most competitive contingency awards, with significant programs from Carbotech Performance Brakes, Hawk Performance, KFP Magnum Brake Pads and Prospeed.

The Official Brake Products of SCCA, Hawk is offering a 2011 product sponsorship for champions, with certificates for the top-10. Touring 1 competitors will earn cash prizes from Hawk for finishing in the top six, including $1,000 to the race winner.

Winners using Carbotech brakes will earn a canopy and product sponsorship for the 2011 season, with certificates offered for finishing second through 10^th in the event.

KFP Magnum offers a $200 certificate for a win in eligible classes, along with $150 and $100 certificates for the remaining podium spots.

Prospeed offers six bottles of RS683 brake fluid to sixth-place finishers in every class.

Suspension components are another integral part of a race car, and AST Suspension and Hyperco both offer contingency programs.

AST offers drivers a $750 product credit for race winners, along with a $250 and $100 credit for second and fifth-place finishes. Hyperco is offering two free Hypercoils suspension coils for first and second-place finishers, with one free suspension coil to third-place finishers.

Fluids of all types are essential for a race car, and world-class companies are participating in this year’s Runoffs contingency program.

Sunoco, the Official Fuel of SCCA, will offer a $100 cash prize to the top finisher in every class, along with a $50 prize to the Sunoco Hard Charger for the driver who gains the most positions from the beginning of the race to the finish. Drivers in the GT-3 race are eligible for up to $1,000 for a top-six finish from the fuel company.

Mobil 1 and Red Line Synthetic Oil also offer top packages for racers using the premium oil brands.

Recently named the Official Oil of SCCA, Mobil 1 offers $500 cash and a Mobil 1 Racer Travel Kit that includes a suitcase, backpack, jacket, shirt and hat, among other prizes. Runners-up will receive a $400 product certificate, while third-place finishers will earn a $250 certificate.

Red Line matches the cash and product certificate amount for podium finishers, and includes a custom Red Line Oil driver’s suit for winners.

Throughout the week of qualifying, Gumout, the Preferred Fuel System Additive of SCCA, is supporting racers with the Gumout Pole Award, rewarding fast qualifiers with a $350 cash bonus. GT-2 competitors can earn cash from Gumout for finishing in the top six, including a $1,000 prize for winning the race. Likewise, Black Magic, the Preferred Automotive Detailing Products of SCCA, is rewarding the top six finishers in the Touring 2 class with an identical payout.

Technology has become a racer’s friend, both before, during and after the on-track sessions.

To encourage drivers to use the Official Racing Simulation of SCCA, iRacing.com is offering a free one-year subscription for a win, and a one-month subscription for podium finishers.

Most drivers are using some type of in-car video and data systems to help improve lap times. Race Technology USA is offering significant discounts on their DL1, DL2 or AX22 systems and accessories to podium finishers not already using their products and gift certificates for parts and upgrades to those who are.

Race-Keeper is offering $250 cash to winners and $150 product credit to podium finishers for supporting their video and data logger, while Chasecam offers $150 to all race winners. AiM Sports is offering an AiM SmartyCam for a Runoffs race win at Road America in select classes.

Racing service providers are also supporting customers with contingencies. Williams Racing Developments rewards eligible class winners, fifth, and 10^th place finishers $300, $200, and $100 product credit. Meanwhile, Taylor Racing Engineering is rewarding fourth-place finishers with a $250 product certificate, while Tilton Engineering offers product certificates up to $100 for first through fifth place.

Several retail outlets for accessories also offer contingencies. Pegasus Auto Racing Supplies offers fourth, fifth and sixth-place finishers gift certificates worth up to $75 in each race. Summit Racing Equipment offers top-four finishers in eligible classes up to $100 in select classes, and Chassistools.com offers sixth-place finishers a Longacre digital tire pressure gauge and all program participants a 10% discount on Longacre products. Third place finishers can receive a $150 G-Force product certificate from Racer Wholesale, while Bald Spot Sports offers a free Creafoam Seat Kit for winners in eligible classes.

Pace American, the Official Trailer of SCCA, is offering cash to the top-six finishers in the E Production class, including $1,000 to the race winner. All classes can earn contingency from Holliday Canopies, whose program offers a $300 Custom Road Racing Canopy product certificate for a podium finish. Current owners can claim a $150 cash price in lieu of the product discount. Grassroots Motorsports Magazine is awarding subscribers who win in any class a $100 prize.

Spec Racer Ford and Formula Enterprises competitors can win $800, $400 or $200 from SCCA Enterprises for finishing on the podium. Staubli is offering the same classes $150 product certificates for drivers finishing first, fifth, 10^th, and 15^th. Touring car category National Champions, under a program offered by World Challenge, will receive free entries for the 2011 season if the winner chooses to make the leap to SCCA Pro Racing. Other podium finishers will receive a single-event entry if they choose to extend their racing career to the Pro Racing ranks. XS Power rewards race winners with a free S680 battery, or provides significant discounts on their other battery lines, while also rewarding other podium finishers with certificates for similar discounts.

More than 630 participants have already registered to fight for Championships in 28 different classes, following four days of qualifying in the days leading up to the races.

All 24 races will be aired live through SpeedcastTV.com beginning Friday, Sept. 24 and concluding Sunday, Sept. 26.

SJSU's Spartan Racing T shirts

T shirts are now available for order from the Formula SAE race team at San Jose State University. This is a student team that competes in the international collegiate race series every year to design, manufacture, and assemble a small autocross vehicle and race it against other schools. The Stpartan Racing Formula SAE team is now beginning its third consecutive year of participation in the event, and planning to travel to Detroit this year in addition to its regular race in Fontana, CA. The Detroit competition is popular for German teams to debut their cars, which are usually very advanced so the competition will be fierce. The students are thrilled to be involved and enjoy the opportunity. Anyone who has ever been involved with this project in their past is proud to tell you about it. It is a very cool experience!

San Jose State aids the team in covering registration fees and giving them a shop to build their vehicles in, but the students are on their own to fund the rest of the project. As an all-student team, they are learning firsthand to coordinate all the details of managing a race team from start to finish. They are sponsored by forward-thinking supporters who invest in their program because of the way it produces well-rounded graduates, although most of the support is material or service based, so money is tight.

How to Scale Your: Car Scaling Made Simple

Scaling your race car is arguably one the most important practices that you can do to increase your chance of visiting victory lane. Proper chassis set up requires that the weight balance is set correctly for the car, driver and track conditions. In order to achieve proper and repeatable weight balance a quality set of electronic scales will need to be obtained.

Before you begin the scaling process you should make sure that the car is race ready. Fluid levels need to be topped off, stagger & tire are pressure set, ride heights adjusted, Caster adjusted, Camber set, rear end square and the toe checked. You will also need to take advantage of the maximum left side weight and check to see if your total weight is within the rules and the front to rear balance is where you and your chassis builder want it. Emphasis should be placed on being race ready before you begin the final scaling procedure as all of these factors will have an effect on the end result.

Now that you are ready for your final scaling procedure you will need to find a level area to weigh the car. Most garage floors vary by quite a bit. Spend a few minutes with a good level and straight edge and mark four spots on the floor that you can use each time you want to scale the car. Make sure that you mark the floor to match up with your wheel base and track width.

Should the floor have low spots you can use simple shims to make all four scale pads level or utilize some leveling trays to speed up the job. Mark the shims or trays with LF, RF, LR, RR so that you can quickly repeat the process each and every week. Consistency is the goal when scaling so weighing the car in the same spot each and every week will improve your chances of having a great handling car.

Now that you have a level surface you can roll the car into position. Set the scale pads next to the appropriate tire and hook up the cables. Make sure that the cables are plugged into the correct pad and turn the scales on. Check that there is no weight on the scale pads and press the zero button. The control box should now read zero and you are ready to place the pads under the car.

Jack up one side at a time and slide the pads under the tires. Place the car in gear or use a stop to keep the car on the scales. Verify that the sway bar is disconnected or completely neutral with plenty of slop. At this point, give the rear of the car a firm settle by placing your knee on the rear bumper. Then do the same at the front.

After settling the front and rear I like to grab the roof roll bar and shake the car several times. I try to let go right in the middle. By settling the car and shaking the roof bar you are helping to insure that the shocks are not hanging up and that you have worked out any small binds in the suspension points. Try to do the settling procedure consistently as this will help you obtain repeatable results. Settle the car after each time you raise it with a jack or make an adjustment.

You can now record your wheel weights, partial weights and percentages. Check that the front to rear balance is correct and that the left side and total are where they need to be. If not then move the lead to the appropriate spot until you are happy. Readjust the ride heights if you have to move lead around.

Now you can check the cross weight. If you want to add cross weight put a turn in the right front and left rear and take a turn out of the left front and right rear. On non coil over cars you may need to go two turns on the rear for every one turn on the front. By adjusting all four corners you will help maintain your ride heights.

Now you can set the sway bar. With the car still on the scales you can see exactly how pre-load you are putting on the bar. Record your final settings and you are ready to go.

Commonly Asked Questions

Should you weigh with the driver in or out?

You can do it either way as long as you consider the variables. Personally, I like to see the driver in the car during the set up process as he is going to be in the car when it goes around the corner. Driver weight tends to vary a bit so having the driver in the car insures the most repeatable results. You can weigh with out the driver as long as you consider the variables that will change. As long as you factor ride height changes and the weight differential scaling with out the driver can work fine. It is really a matter of personal choice.

How level do the scales need to be?

We get asked that a lot. For optimum results the closer to exact the better when it comes to level. Sometimes you can compromise. Picture a thick piece of flat glass with scale pads resting on top. Start with the glass perfectly level and your results will be perfect. Now take the glass and lower the front by one inch. The four scale pads are still in the same plane in relation to each other on the glass. In this scenario the effect from the front being lower will be very small. You can picture the same thing lowing the left side by one inch and still get good result.

Now picture a ½" shim on the glass under the Left Rear and Right Front corners or just under any one corner. Your scale numbers will go nuts. The shims will be shown as cross weight on the scales. The bottom line is that you need to maintain scale pads within the same plane. Raising one corner or opposing corners is going to effect your readings. In general, it is best to keep the scales as level as possible.

Do I have to re-zero the scales if I make a change?

Can I change the left side or rear weight by turning the jack screws?

You can turn all day and you will not move the left side or rear weight with the jack screws. To make changes to Left side or Rear percentages you will need to move lead or other mass within the car.

SCCAGear welcomes you to our "Build Your Own Apparel Workshop.SCCAGear has worked hard to develop the most up to date manufacturing techniques to economically produce high quality embroidered garments, on demand. This allows you to select the exact garment you want and your choice of SCCA logo’s with the option to even add personalization. This on demand production allows you the most selection, while keeping your prices low.

First you chose your garment, from casual shirts to jackets, or from dress shirts to checkered racing crew shirts. Once you chose the garment you want you from the large variety of styles then chose your exact size. Most styles are available from extra small to 4 or 5 extra large to fit every SCCA member. Chose the color you want. Each garment is available for you in a huge variety of colors. After those choices, then move on down the workbench to choosing one of the 7 SCCA logos you want. You have just designed a SCCA garment just for you!

After making your selections, our production team will be hard at work producing YOUR SPECIAL GARMENT which will typically arrive at your door within 7-10 business days.
