How to Scale Your: Car Scaling Made Simple
Scaling your race car is arguably one the most important practices that you can do to increase your chance of visiting victory lane. Proper chassis set up requires that the weight balance is set correctly for the car, driver and track conditions. In order to achieve proper and repeatable weight balance a quality set of electronic scales will need to be obtained.
Before you begin the scaling process you should make sure that the car is race ready. Fluid levels need to be topped off, stagger & tire are pressure set, ride heights adjusted, Caster adjusted, Camber set, rear end square and the toe checked. You will also need to take advantage of the maximum left side weight and check to see if your total weight is within the rules and the front to rear balance is where you and your chassis builder want it. Emphasis should be placed on being race ready before you begin the final scaling procedure as all of these factors will have an effect on the end result.
Now that you are ready for your final scaling procedure you will need to find a level area to weigh the car. Most garage floors vary by quite a bit. Spend a few minutes with a good level and straight edge and mark four spots on the floor that you can use each time you want to scale the car. Make sure that you mark the floor to match up with your wheel base and track width.
Should the floor have low spots you can use simple shims to make all four scale pads level or utilize some leveling trays to speed up the job. Mark the shims or trays with LF, RF, LR, RR so that you can quickly repeat the process each and every week. Consistency is the goal when scaling so weighing the car in the same spot each and every week will improve your chances of having a great handling car.
Now that you have a level surface you can roll the car into position. Set the scale pads next to the appropriate tire and hook up the cables. Make sure that the cables are plugged into the correct pad and turn the scales on. Check that there is no weight on the scale pads and press the zero button. The control box should now read zero and you are ready to place the pads under the car.
Jack up one side at a time and slide the pads under the tires. Place the car in gear or use a stop to keep the car on the scales. Verify that the sway bar is disconnected or completely neutral with plenty of slop. At this point, give the rear of the car a firm settle by placing your knee on the rear bumper. Then do the same at the front.
After settling the front and rear I like to grab the roof roll bar and shake the car several times. I try to let go right in the middle. By settling the car and shaking the roof bar you are helping to insure that the shocks are not hanging up and that you have worked out any small binds in the suspension points. Try to do the settling procedure consistently as this will help you obtain repeatable results. Settle the car after each time you raise it with a jack or make an adjustment.
You can now record your wheel weights, partial weights and percentages. Check that the front to rear balance is correct and that the left side and total are where they need to be. If not then move the lead to the appropriate spot until you are happy. Readjust the ride heights if you have to move lead around.
Now you can check the cross weight. If you want to add cross weight put a turn in the right front and left rear and take a turn out of the left front and right rear. On non coil over cars you may need to go two turns on the rear for every one turn on the front. By adjusting all four corners you will help maintain your ride heights.
Now you can set the sway bar. With the car still on the scales you can see exactly how pre-load you are putting on the bar. Record your final settings and you are ready to go.
Commonly Asked Questions
Should you weigh with the driver in or out?
You can do it either way as long as you consider the variables. Personally, I like to see the driver in the car during the set up process as he is going to be in the car when it goes around the corner. Driver weight tends to vary a bit so having the driver in the car insures the most repeatable results. You can weigh with out the driver as long as you consider the variables that will change. As long as you factor ride height changes and the weight differential scaling with out the driver can work fine. It is really a matter of personal choice.
How level do the scales need to be?
We get asked that a lot. For optimum results the closer to exact the better when it comes to level. Sometimes you can compromise. Picture a thick piece of flat glass with scale pads resting on top. Start with the glass perfectly level and your results will be perfect. Now take the glass and lower the front by one inch. The four scale pads are still in the same plane in relation to each other on the glass. In this scenario the effect from the front being lower will be very small. You can picture the same thing lowing the left side by one inch and still get good result.
Now picture a ½" shim on the glass under the Left Rear and Right Front corners or just under any one corner. Your scale numbers will go nuts. The shims will be shown as cross weight on the scales. The bottom line is that you need to maintain scale pads within the same plane. Raising one corner or opposing corners is going to effect your readings. In general, it is best to keep the scales as level as possible.
Do I have to re-zero the scales if I make a change?
Longacre Computerscales allow you to make as many adjustments as needed with out re-zeroing. Simply make your adjustments, settle the car and record your results.
Can I change the left side or rear weight by turning the jack screws?
You can turn all day and you will not move the left side or rear weight with the jack screws. To make changes to Left side or Rear percentages you will need to move lead or other mass within the car. |

BOWMANVILLE, Canada (August 29, 2010) – Brad Rampelberg, of San Jose, Calif., earned a wild SCCA Pro Racing Playboy Mazda MX-5 Cup win Sunday at Mosport International Raceway, part of the Mobil 1 Grand Prix of Mosport, in a battle with Lyonel Kent, of Knoxville, Tenn., and Russell Walker, of Dallas, Texas, that wasn’t decided until the final corner.
At the finish of the 28-lap, 68.852-mile race that averaged 90.361 mph flag-to-flag, Rampelberg had grabbed a 0.255-second victory, his fifth of the season in the No. 4 AMG Racing/Mazda/Cobalt Brakes Mazda MX-5. The path to the checkered flag in round nine of 11 in the season, however, was anything but pretty.
Rampelberg, who entered the weekend third in the championship and locked in a season-long fight with leader Justin Piscitell and teammate Michael Cooper, had struggled through the practice and qualifying sessions early in the weekend at the 10-turn, 2.459-mile circuit east of Toronto.
“Mosport is an old-school track,” Rampelberg said at the finish. “I’ve raced here before, and I have to be honest, this track is faster than I am. It’s a great win here – there are a few classic tracks in North America, and winning at Road America and winning at Mosport is just amazing. You don’t get much better than that.”
While Rampelberg fell from his seventh starting spot to ninth on the first lap, polesitter Nick Evans, in the No. 28 Team MER/Mazda/Sparco Mazda MX-5, and Cooper, in the No. 84 AMG Racing/Bromante Landscaping & Design MX-5, set the pace up front.
By lap two, Piscitell, who had started sixth in the No. 89 Team MER/DAMG Worldwide/Merchant Services MX-5, had joined the two leaders up front. Trying to slip past Cooper for third through the left-hand turn nine, Piscitell nosed ahead of Cooper. The two made contact, moving Piscitell off the racing surface at the entrance of turn 10 and into the tire barrier.
The contact moved both racers to the end of the field, with Piscitell suffering the heaviest damage. He would finish 13th, eight laps down. Cooper finished 11th.
Cooper was penalized 10 points and placed on two-race probation for his role in the incident.
Back at the front, Evans led a six-car breakaway for the lead that became a five-car train on lap eight when Jesse Combs lost control of his No. 77 ALARA Racing/coolgas.com MX-5 and made contact with the tire barriers, also in the final turn. Combs would rejoin the race, but a trip down pit lane to check the damage left him running 12th at the finish.
Evans continued to lead through lap 13, but transmission troubles relegated the driver who had topped both practice and qualifying to a sixth-place finish.
Ara Malkhassian, driving the No. 11 ALARA Racing/Bulldog Productions MX-5, took the point on lap 14, and then relinquished the lead to Rampelberg on lap 15. After turning the race’s fastest lap of 1:36.711 (91.534 mph), Malkhassian fell off the pace, leaving Rampelberg, Walker and Kent to battle for the lead.
Rampelberg led the final 13 laps, with Kent and Russell swapping the second position on lap 22. On the final lap, Kent actually moved into the lead through turn seven, but the right hand final turns left Rampelberg on the inside and just ahead at the finish line.
“Nick Evans and Michael Cooper were the two guys to beat this weekend, and I was just hoping to be a part of that train,” Rampelberg said. “I had to race smart, and there was a bunch of attrition. The AMG guys gave me a great car, and I’m just happy to be here. I got raced really clean by Russell Walker and Lyonel Kent at the end, and it was another great racing finish. I don’t like to work this hard, but we needed this win.”
For Kent, it was his best finish since a win at Road Atlanta in round two.
“I had my work cut out for me today, starting back in eighth,” Kent said. “ALARA Racing gave me a good car. The qualifying strategy didn’t work out the way we had planned. The first couple of laps were pretty crazy, and I just wanted to keep my nose clean and make sure the Bulldog Productions car was there at the end. That’s what paid off was patience, and I slowly picked cars off one-by-one.
“It came down to Brad, Russell and myself. I got a good draft on Brad coming down the back straight and we went side-by-side through eight, nine and 10. It was a close race and it’s great to be back on the podium.”
Walker’s third-place finish was by far his best of the season in MX-5 Cup. Driving a partial schedule, Walker had yet to finish in the top-10 in four previous races but qualified third and was able to run in the lead back for the entire race at Mosport.
“I’ve been here twice with Star Mazda, and it helped me get up to speed quickly,” Walker said. “The Team MER guys really helped me get up to speed this weekend. For all the open-wheel guys who think this is easy, they’re in for a shock. It’s been a big challenge to adapt to these cars, only running four races this weekend, but the work paid off this weekend. It’s been an amazing experience, but we’re getting there finally and it’s good to get my first pro podium.”
Jeff Mosing drove the No. 30 Team MER/Frank’s International/RaceNowForAutism MX-5 to a career-best fourth place finish, one day after his best-ever qualifying effort left him starting fifth. Mosing fell back early, but continued to turn laps approaching the times of the leaders.
Alfred Caiola also earned his top career finish, finishing fifth in the No. 09 AMG/B&L Management MX-5 after qualifying 11. Caiola passed the struggling Evans on lap 23 to move into the top-five.
The weekend gives Rampelberg the edge in the Championship battle with two races remaining both during a doubleheader weekend at Miller Motorsports Park. In third place and trailing Piscitell by 12 entering the weekend, Rampelberg now leads Piscitell by 16 points (482 – 466) after earning 61 points with the round nine win. Cooper trails Rampelberg by 28 points in the championship hunt. Evans (413 points) and Combs (404 points) complete the top five.
Playboy Mazda MX-5 Cup rules allow each driver to drop the lowest point-scoring race from their final tally. With the excluded race, Rampelberg leads by 21 points over Piscitell, with Cooper 28 points in arrears of Rampelberg.
The SCCA Pro Racing Playboy Mazda MX-5 Cup finishes the season with a doubleheader weekend at Miller Motorsports Park, Sept. 10-12. For more information and results, visit www.mx-5cup.com.

BOWMANVILLE, Canada (August 28, 2010) – Nick Evans, of Powell, Ohio, continued to set the pace in Saturday’s SCCA Pro Racing Playboy Mazda MX-5 Cup qualifying at Mosport International Raceway. After topping Friday’s practice, Evans earned the pole for Sunday’s Round Nine of 11 race, part of the Mobil 1 Grand Prix of Mosport weekend.
Evans turned a time of 1:35.571 (92.626 mph) in the No. 28 Team MER/Mazda/Sparco Mazda MX-5 to establish a new Series qualifying record at Mosport and earn the top starting spot on the grid. The pole is Evans’ third in four races.
“At Team MER, we like to work together in qualifying, and we were able to do it very effectively this time,” Evans said. “We had to make sure each driver was able to feed off the other drivers and get a good tow. We gave each of us an opportunity to do that in the beginning, and my lap held up. It seemed like the laps came early, and then they fell off a little bit and we couldn’t get back down there. I was lucky it held up. It’s going to be really close in the race, but I’ve got my teammates with me and as long as we work together, we’ll be fine.”
The session almost ended before it began for Evans with a small problem in pit lane while waiting on the green flag.
“I don’t know what happened,” Evans explained. “The engine just died on pit lane, and it was idling really rough. Once it was under power it was fine, and there wasn’t any issue. Anything like that freaks me out, and it might have all been in my head. Luckily, it was fine.”
Starting alongside Evans in the front row is Michael Cooper, of Syosset, N.Y., who turned a best time of 1:35.694 (92.507 mph) in the No. 84 AMG Racing/Bromante Landscaping & Design MX-5. With the effort, Cooper earns a valuable Championship point that leaves him just six points behind Justin Piscitell with just three races remaining.
Piscitell (No. 89 Team MER/DAMG Worldwide/Merchant Services MX-5) and Brad Rampelberg (No. 4 AMG Racing/Mazda/Cobalt Brakes), who sits just 12 points behind Piscitell in the Championship, qualified sixth and seventh, respectively, and outside of the bonus points awarded to the top-five qualifiers. Just 0.734-second separates Rampelberg’s lap from Evans’ pole, however, leaving both Championship contenders in the hunt for Sunday’s race.
Qualifying third and starting on the second row is Russell Walker, of Dallas, Texas, driving the No. 29 Team MER Mazda MX-5. Walker turned a best time of 1:36.063 (92.152 mph) to earn his best starting position in the MX-5 Cup, topping a previous best of sixth at Autobahn Country Club.
Walker will share the second row with Jesse Combs’ No. 77 ALARA Racing/coolgas.com MX-5, after Combs posted a best time of 1:36.239 (91.983 mph). It marks the fifth-consecutive top-five starting position for Combs, who sits fourth in the Championship.
Jeff Mosing also earned his best starting position of the season, qualifying fifth in the No. 30 Team MER/Frank’s International/RaceNowForAutism MX-5 with a best time of 1:36.271 (91.953 mph).
The SCCA Pro Racing Playboy Mazda MX-5 Cup field will take the green flag at 10:25 a.m. EDT on Sunday, Round Nine of 11 in the Championship. To follow notes and timing, please visit www.mx-5cup.com.

08/25/2010 Written by SCCA Communications
 Photo:Jerry Doctor TOPEKA, Kan. (August 25, 2010) –
In a change from last year’s snowy weather, a move from October to
August meant that a record-setting 74 competitors would participate in
the SCCA RallyCross National Championship presented by Subaru and
Heuberger Motors, August 21-22, under temperatures in excess of 90
degrees alongside the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. At the end of
the weekend, eight participants walked away from the U.S. Truck Driving
School in Fountain, Colo., as SCCA RallyCross National Champions. Under
the RallyCross National Championship format, each competitor turned
laps on three different circuits laid out on the facility 25-minutes
south of Colorado Springs. Each of the classes in the Stock, Prepared,
and Modified classes turned four runs on Saturday morning around a tract
designed by Matt Dahn and Mike Eckert, with some assistance from Brent
Blakely. Blakely then reconfigured the course for the afternoon session,
where the Stock and Prepared classes took three laps, but the Modified
category only managed one run before darkness ended the day. On
Sunday morning, the Modified category classes led off the morning with
four runs on a circuit designed by Ken Cashion and Blakely, followed by
two runs each from the Prepared and Stock categories to give every
competitor nine runs in total. The lowest aggregate total of the runs,
including two-second penalties for every cone hit throughout the
weekend, determined the winners. The Modified category,
containing both the Modified Two (for two-wheel drive cars) and Modified
Four (for all-wheel drive machines) hosted two of the largest three
classes of the weekend. In Modified Two, Denver’s Jonathan
McGrew led on time in his 2006 Honda Civic Si until the eighth round,
when Cashion’s run in his 2007 Honda Racing HPD/Team Dynamics Honda
Civic Si was 1.384-seconds quicker to take the lead. At the conclusion,
Cashion led by 0.989-second, but McGrew’s two-cone penalty in the first
run pushed the gap to 4.989-seconds for Cashion’s Modified Two National
Championship. Harold Denham, of Holliston, Mass., Chris Blake, of
Golden, Colo., and Eric Adams, of Laramie, Wyo., completed the trophy
positions in the 19-car class. Chris O’Driscoll, of Leadville,
Colo., defended his Modified Four title with a 10.238-second victory
after nine rounds and the assessment of penalties. O’Driscoll’s 2007
Subaru WRX topped the 14-car field, with Denver’s Max Johnson his
closest competition in a 1995 Flatirons Tuning/Suba Performance Subaru
Impreza. Nathanael Usher (2002 Subaru WRX Wagon), of Lansing, Mich., and
Eric Genack (2003 Subaru Impreza WRX) fought for the final two trophy
spots, with Usher finishing 0.243-second ahead of Genack for third. Both the Prepared and Stock categories featured classes that weren’t decided until the cone penalties were assessed. In
the 18-car Prepared All class, Dahn, of Milford, Michigan, completed
nine runs in his 2003 Performance Theory/ATS Subaru WRX 1.658-seconds
faster than Ryan Gates, of Colorado Springs. Dahn, however, clipped a
cone on his seventh run – a feat that Gates managed to avoid in his 2002
Heuberger Subaru/subarupartsstore.net Subaru WRX wagon, landing Gates
the Prepared All National Championship by a final adjusted time of
0.342-second. Cody Hatfield (2006 AWDPirates.net Subaru Impreza), of
Thornton, Colo., was third, nearly four seconds behind the leaders. Bill
Martin, of Ridgecrest, Calif., was fourth in a Mitsubishi Evo, followed
by Carlos Filipe, of Orlando, Fla., in a 1998 CMFRacing.com Subaru
Impreza. Keith Lightfoot, of Steamboat Springs, Colo., earned
the Prepared Front National Championship by a 16.734-second margin of
victory behind the wheel of his 2002 Checkpoint Racing Ford Focus SVT.
Ron Foley, of Birmingham, Ala., drove a 2007 RCG Inc. Honda Civic Si to
the runner-up position. Edwin Cunnel, also of Birmingham, did
bring a National Championship back to Alabama, taking the Prepared Rear
title by an adjusted 11.573-seconds in a 1975 Element Garage BMW 2002.
He bested Jerred Burnard, of Colorado Springs, driving a 1985 Manic
Motorsports Toyota MR2. The Stock All class was a three-driver
battle that wasn’t decided until factoring in cone penalties. Jason
Staats, of Keizer, Ore., topped Gary Marascola, of Windsor, Colo., by
just 0.729-second over the course of the nine runs, with Jakub “Kubo”
Kordisch, of Brighton, Colo., just 1.059-seconds behind Staats. Cones
would become the story of the Stock All class, as Marascola had a clean
weekend, with Staats clipping one and Kordisch collecting six. At the
conclusion, Marascola claimed the title by 1.109-seconds in a 2009
Subaru Impreza, followed by Staats’ 2005 Entek International/Primitive
Racing Subaru STi and Kordisch’s 2000 Subaru Impreza. Chris Staats,
sharing a car with Jason, finished fourth. Don Hardy, of
Colorado Springs, claimed the Stock Front championship in a 1991 Hardy
Boys Motorsports Ford Escort GT by 14.772-seconds over Partryk Mateki,
of Colorado Springs, in a 2005 Mazda6. Denver’s Greg McMahon brought
home the Stock Rear National Championship in a 1985 Zodow.com Toyota
MR2.

08/24/2010 Written by SCCA Communications
TOPEKA, Kan. (Aug. 24, 2010) –Sports
Car Club of America is currently seeking nominations for the SCCA Hall
of Fame Class of 2010. Up to five nominees will be selected for
induction into the Hall of Fame on February 12, 2011, at the SCCA
National Convention Presented by Gumout. The SCCA National Hall
of Fame was created in 2004 to preserve, protect and record the history
and accomplishments of the Club by acknowledging those members who’ve
made a significant impact on the development of the SCCA, be it through
service to the national organization, achievements in national
competition or brining national recognition to SCCA. Nominations will be accepted through Sept. 30 and can be sent to SCCAHof@scca.com
or to the attention of Howard Duncan at the SCCA National Office (P.O.
Box 19400, Topeka, KS 66619 or fax 785-862-7183). Nominations should
include a list of the nominee’s accomplishments and a summary of why he
or she should be selected. Those who have been nominated previously, but
not selected, can always be re-nominated to ensure the most up-to-date
and thorough information. “Being inducted into the SCCA Hall of
Fame is a tremendous honor,” SCCA President and CEO Jeff Dahnert said.
“This is where you will find those who have been our greatest
contributors and most successful competitors. It’s also an opportunity
to honor those that may have achieved their greatest notoriety in other
racing organizations, but achieved that only after success in SCCA. I
encourage all members to share with the committee the individuals that
made an indelible positive mark on the Club as a National organization.” After
reviewing the potential candidates, the SCCA Hall of Fame Nominating
Committee will select 15 official nominees to submit to the SCCA Hall of
Fame Selection Committee. The Selection Committee will then conduct
additional research on the 15 nominees before choosing the final
inductees, who will be formally announced in December. The Hall of Fame
Induction Ceremony for the Class of 2011 will take place at the 2010
SCCA National Convention in Las Vegas, Feb. 10-12. In addition to
nominees for the Hall of Fame, resumes are being accepted for
consideration on the Nominating and Selection committees. Interested
individuals should contact Howard Duncan at the above information. More
information about the SCCA Hall of Fame, including a list of previous
inductees is available at www.scca.com by clicking on “About SCCA” and
then selecting “SCCA Hall of Fame,” from the left-hand menu.

 Photo:Mark Weber Elkhart Lake, Wis. (August 21, 2010) –
Three SCCA and SCCA Pro Racing drivers have been named among the eight
finalist for the prestigious Team USA Scholarship. Patrick Gallagher,
the 2009 Polesitter and runner-up in Formula 500 at the SCCA National
Championship Runoffs®, SCCA Pro Racing F2000 Championship race winner
Jonathan Scarallo, and Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup competitor Arie Ouimet
are all eligible for the award. The Team USA Scholarship enters
its third decade of providing opportunities for talented young American
race car drivers with today’s nominations for the “Class of 2010” who
will vie for a pair of scholarships to contest the traditional
end-of-season Formula Ford events in England in October and November. In
2008, Team USA driver Josef Newgarden became the first American ever to
win the prestigious Formula Ford Festival (Kent division) at Brands
Hatch, while Conor Daly became the youngest winner of the Walter Hayes
Trophy at Silverstone. Last year Brett Smrz finished a sensational third
at Brands Hatch, despite starting 27th, and Connor De Phillippi
mirrored Daly’s success from the previous year, besting over 100 other
drivers to win the Walter Hayes Trophy. All of the 2010
candidates enjoyed success in the karting ranks before moving into cars
within the past two years. The 2010 nominees are: • Neil Alberico, 17, from Los Gatos, Calif. – winner of the 2009-2010 Bondurant Championship Race Series •
Ashley Freiberg, 18, from Homer Glen, Ill. – earlier this year became
the first female ever to win a Skip Barber Racing Series title,
clinching the Southern Regional crown, and the first to win a round of
the Skip Barber National • Patrick Gallagher, 17, from Thornville, Ohio – standout in SCCA Formula 5 and Formula E competition • Miles Maroney, 16, from Topanga Canyon, Calif. – currently second and top rookie in the Pacific F2000 Series • Arie Ouimet, 19, from Plymouth, Mass. – currently second in the VW Jetta TDI Cup with two podium finishes •
Spencer Pigot, 16, from Windermere, Fla. – MAZDASPEED Development
Driver, current leader of the BFGoodrich Skip Barber National Presented
by Mazda Series with two wins, nine podium finishes and four poles from
10 races • Jonathan Scarallo, 18, from Hauppauge, N.Y. – recently claimed his first win in the F2000 Championship Series •
Felix Serralles, 17, from Haines City, Fla. – MAZDASPEED Development
Driver, currently third in the Skip Barber National Series point
standings For the first time, the Bob Bondurant School of High
Performance Driving, based at Firebird Raceway in Chandler, Ariz., will
host a “shoot-out” to determine which two young Americans will follow in
the footsteps of an accomplished list of former Team USA Scholarship
winners including Jimmy Vasser (the first winner in 1990), Bryan Herta,
Buddy Rice, Memo Gidley, Paul Edwards, Andy Lally, Joey Hand, Bryan
Sellers, A.J. Allmendinger and J.R. Hildebrand. Bondurant, who
shared the GT class-winning Shelby Cobra with Dan Gurney at the 24 Hours
of Le Mans in 1964 and contested nine Formula One World Championship
races, including a best result of fourth in the 1966 Monaco Grand Prix,
founded the school in California in 1968. It has been based in Arizona
since 1989, and this year hosted a 12-race open-wheel championship for
the first time, offering an array of prizes and opportunities for the
inaugural champion. “As the new kid on the block, it’s important
to expose our race series to as many talented young drivers as
possible,” said accomplished kart racer Alan Rudolph, Director of the
Bondurant Championship Race Series. “We’re excited to support and host
the Team USA Scholarship, both to showcase our championship and to give
back to the sport that Bob and I love so much.” The Team USA
Scholarship is supported by Doug Mockett & Company, Road Racing
Drivers Club, Cooper Tire & Rubber Company, Walldinger Racing,
Robo-Pong, Highcroft Racing, “The Road to Indy,” American Honda, Silicon
Salvage, McMurry Inc., Dyson Racing, Metalore, The Gorsline Company,
Integrated Performance Technology, Robertson Racing, PitFit Training,
Sparco USA, Cruden America, Buttonwillow Raceway Park, iRacing.com,

and several former scholarship winners. For more information, please visit www.TeamUSAScholarship.org.

TOPEKA, Kan. (Aug. 23, 2010) – SCCA’s
Board of Directors is seeking input on proposals dealing with the Club
Racing program detailed in the September 2010 Fastrack® News, available
now at SCCA.com. Input is sought on the topics of Runoffs
qualification process for 2011 and beyond as well as the class structure
in National racing. Specific details are available in the first two
pages of the Fastrack, available at http://www.scca.com/contentpage.aspx?content=78. In
addition to the input sought, the Board revealed that it would not
grant waivers to classes falling below the current 2.5 cars per race
participation rule in the General Competition Rules for 2011. This
position means that classes not protected in the GCR due to an incubator
period that fall below 2.5 cars per race in 2010 will be placed on
probation for 2011. The incubator classes are: STO, STU, FE and F1000,
which all began in 2007. The full text of this section of the GCR is in
Article 9.1.12. Input on the proposals is being collected through the normal Club Racing Board method, at http://www.crbscca.com.

fourth-annual event will be hosted 25 minutes south of Colorado Springs,
Colo. at the U.S. Truck Driving School, a picturesque location
alongside the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. This year’s
National Championship race is wide open in every class, as only one of
the 2009 titlists, Chris O’Driscoll in the Modified Four class, is
currently entered and attempting to defend his title. With
Robert Johnson not competing, the Stock All class becomes one of the
most wide-open classes in addition to one of the largest. Last year’s
bronze medalist, Peter Zlamany of Fort Collins, Colo., returns in a 1992
SCR Performance Plymouth Laser RS hoping to move up two more spots on
the podium. Zlamany was the fastest on the final day of competition a
year ago, providing momentum entering this year’s event. Stock
Front’s champion may not have returned, but the trophy could stay in the
family. While Tim Hardy currently isn’t shown on the entry list, last
year’s third-place finisher, Tim’s father, Donald Hardy, of Colorado
Springs, tries to solve his title chances in a 1991 Hardy Boys
Motorsports Ford Escort GT. David Kabal, of Boulder, Colo., has
progressed throughout the season in his 2002 Volkswagen Jetta and
Corvallis, Oregon’s Mark Anton has shown speed in his 2006 Ford Focus. Stock
Rear currently seems to be a two-driver battle between a pair of Denver
natives, Greg McMahon and Anna Rolsma. They’ll share a 1985 Zodow.com
Toyota MR2 over the two days of competition, with McMahon hoping for
redemption after a mechanical DNF while leading a year ago cost him a
shot at a title. Another two-car showdown is set up in the Prepared Rear
class, with Chris White, of Kennesaw, Ga., squaring off against Edwin
Cunill, of Birmingham, Ala., in his 1975 Element Garage BMW 2002. Ron
Foley, of Birmingham, Ala., is the outsider looking in at the Prepared
Front, where it remains to be seen how he’ll handle his first visit to
the unforgiving surface at the Fountain site. Driving a very fast 2007
RCG Inc. Honda Civic Si, Foley will be challenged by Colorado Region’s
Ryan Haenny and Keith Lightfoot. Haenny, of Lakewood, Colo., will sit
behind the wheel of a 1989 Styluss Customs Chevrolet Beretta, while
Lightfoot challenges in a 2002 Coyote Ridge Motorsports Ford Focus SVT. The
Prepared All class is primarily dominated by Subarus, but Bill Martin,
of Ridgecrest, Calif., is a contender in his Mitsubishi Evo. Colorado
Springs’ Zachary Collins (2002 Enginerd Racing Subaru Impreza WRX) and
Ryan Gates (2002 Heuberger Subaru/subarupartsstore.net Subaru WRX) are
also contenders, with Gates having had a very successful summer in
RallyCross. The competition in the Modified Two class may focus
on a pair of Denver drivers sharing a car, with Ken Cashion and Jonathan
McGrew sharing a 2007 Honda Racing HPD/Team Dynamics Honda Civic Si.
Modified Two is one of the most diverse classes at this year’s
RallyCross National Championships presented by Subaru and Heuberger
Motors, with the class containing William MacDonald’s 1968 daVinci
Designs Volvo 144, Volkswagen GTI’s, Nissan Sentra SE-Rs, Ford Escort
GTs and Acura Integra GSRs. O’Driscoll, of Leadville, Colo.,
returns to defend his Modified Four title in his 2007 Subaru WRX, but
he’ll be challenged by a number of drivers in the largest class of the
weekend. Eric Ganack, of Aurora, Colo., should be a factor in his 2003
Subaru Impreza WRX. Max Johnson is sure to be a contender, moving to the
Modified Four class in a 1995 Flatirons Tuning Suba Performance Subaru
Impreza for this year after capturing the Prepared All title in 2009. The
2010 SCCA RallyCross National Championship presented by Subaru and
Heuberger Motors officially begins the morning of Saturday, August 21,
with National Champions crowned at the conclusion of competition on
Sunday, August 22.

It was probably last year at the SCCA Runoffs at Road America. Well, here is your chance to once again see some of the best road-racers in America take to the track in 24 races over three days.
We focus so much of our effort on promoting participation and worker attendance, but the Runoffs is one of motorsports’ true crown jewel events and I encourage everyone to attend the event. September is a beautiful time of year in Wisconsin and SCCA Club Racing drivers put on a great show all weekend long.
I’m pleased to tell you that Road America has extended a special price ticket offer to SCCA members for the 2010 National Championship Runoffs Presented by Subway.
